It's not JUST about video. You can tell stories in many ways. Above is a post-card.
...None the less this blog is about video
Video is a powerful way to convey messages. Using the power to manipulate sounds and sights in the 4th dimension you can erase any number of mistakes and elevate your own self/vision/ideas to any level of coolness. If you have experimented with video or seen video you would like to emulate you are on the right path because you are thinking.
Thinking is the first step to knowing 'What You Need to Know About Video Storytelling'
Step 1. Thinking
It is easy to avoid if you train yourself that way. Thinking can be the most valuable tool in your self promotion arsenal.
Do you do it?
Just imagine how much time an money could be outsourced if you take up the role of thinker. One of the biggest obstacles that eliminates people from the job is the 'I can't mentality.' Now with thinking there is no room for the 'I can't mentality.' Hurdle that with fewer syllables. 'I can.' See wasn't that easy?
That is the power of thinking.
Step 1. Paint a Picture
What I should have said is make an omelette but the same rules apply for both. If you listen to me talk for any length of time you have probably heard me say this. You will hear me say it again.
'You can't make an omelette with every ingredient in the fridge.'
You can but it will be gross. Same with painting a picture. You can't always use all of the colors. Yes there is a lot in your wheelhouse and it can be a lot to share but I implore you to consider the simple 'Less is more,' strategy.
Tell them what they need to know. Don't empty the whole fridge into the pan.
3. Gain love & respect
Gain love & respect from others by having love & respect for yourself. Be proud of your story and let that reflect in the telling of it. You shouldn't be afraid to laugh at yourself from time to time. Just make sure you have a true and honest love and respect for your story. Know that it is worth telling. And as I emphasized in Step 2. Only use necessary inredients.
While there is so much more depth that this could be expounded into I have only given you the necessary ingredients for now. Stay tuned for my book in September and check out the author's page:
The World of Live Streaming
This new future of live streaming is changing the way business is conducted, especially in the video world. What used to go on SD cards is now hosted to the cloud... as it is recorded. I used to think 'Upload' after a shoot, now I think 'Download.'
The ability to keep people interested in live vs. edited format is incredibly different. To be completely honest it is very hard to keep engagement in the live sector. Upbeat and happening action in edited world can often be the boiling down of many hours of footage to produce a few minutes.
From five minutes, to a half hour, to an hour, to two hours of live video that people will want to watch takes work. We are talking about the need for rampant energy - fast informational flow - and no room for stagnation or error. It is after all LIVE!
None the less a new frontier is upon us. We have the likes of the moon landing in our pockets. The ability to be streaming live and mobile. Unfortunately people aren't lounging behind TV Dinner trays and waiting for your broadcast to come through. You have to market and promote if you want to gain and maintain viewership. Go forth and be live!
If you want to check out the live streams from the show it starts here:
This article is about cross platform optimization for video. Putting more videos in more places for more results. The platforms this blog discusses include YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MailChimp, Your Website, and Vimeo.
Since this is a blog on my website it is a great place to make an example. Shown below are videos posted via my 2 favorite video hosting platforms, and then a video imbedded directly to my website.
You can clearly see that there is a difference between the various options. Different flavors that allow you the user - to get what you want. In my opinion the differences are clear.
- Vimeo gives you the ability to have a beautiful video.
- Youtube offers a highly searchable video.
- Imbedding directly to your website combines some elements of both and brings people organic search results directly to your website with no middle man. However it does not disqualify the other options.
So why not just imbed every video directly to your website?
What about posting video to Facebook?
Putting Video in MailChimp is so easy...
Optimization for Twitter & Instagram
Much like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter allow you to record video directly to the platform. Start recording and then move through the prompts. Live video sharing is extremely popular on Facebook and Instagram.
To edit video for Instagram I recommend creating a project that is square 800x800. Twitter on the other hand has no problem with the widescreen, turn the phone sideways, 16x9 video we have come to know and love.
Whatever you are putting out there, make sure it is for the right reasons.
You need to decide if you are creating a brand or a religion. The differences are significant. First off there is the misnomer of religion. There are three definitions,
1. Belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power. [Let's just call it what it is] God or gods.
2. A particular system of faith and worship.
3. A pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance.
In 2013 Gavan Fitzsimons wrote a fascinating article. The title of that work 'Are consumer brands replacing religion?' Religion is key here - it is much. I would think the third definition is almost a goal for most business. The second creepy, and the first horrifying.
I will place a link to Gavan's article at the end for further research. My target however is for you and your product to achieve number three. 'Gotta catch em' all!' for instance.
People who have been reading Time magazine since 1939. These people are not practicing brand loyalty... they are involved in a religion. Beatles at their height... religion. Dave Ramsey... religion.
Kleenex, If we never saw a Kleenex brand tissue again I doubt a shot of protest would be fired. Yet, the name would likely live on. Brand by definition. What is that definition?
My recommendation... be a religion because nobody NEEDS a brand.
Hear Like Your Audience
It starts with the first line. An old fashion thesis like we were all taught in Grammar School. It's not a mystery, it's the 1 of the old 1-2 punch. This message needs to land square on the audience's jaw. Not a brain teaser, a direct and deliberate message with clear meaning.
This brings me to your second point - know your audience.
I will put you in the shoes of your audience. Teaching you to eat, walk, and most importantly hear like your audience. Only once you hear like your audience can you speak to them. In other word's know what you sound like to them. The greatest hurdle is just getting your point across.
You want to see the difference?
It's High Time,
We start getting exactly what we want out of life.
I suggest you settle for nothing less than the nearest approximation of your dreams. Design the life you have always wanted. Does this sound confusing? That may be because you haven't been listening to yourself. Usually caused by spending too much time listening to others. You soul has a lot to say.
If you don't feel it in your heart, Don't do it.
Why the hell would you play a game to loose? That is the product of being the result of exterior results. You must be a product of interior results! Be the lead character in your own life, not a supporting role to some other force.
Easier said than done? It is not!
It is easier done - just imagine coming to the end of your life and looking back on less than your best effort. That is hard. That is the hardest work of all. What is easier is the effort of daily success. Get what you want out of every day. Here is a simple three step proven method:
1. Develop a goal.
2. Do everything you need to complete it.
Pro tip: Write the goal down on a piece of paper, keep it with you, read it often.
What's with the uniform?
I hear the uniform works. Military, security, first responders, and the borderline sociopathic laser focused business builder. The big example is Steve Jobs, notorious for wearing the same thing every day. Black on black. Alleviating that early morning decision making part of the brain to bigger / better things.
There are actually a lot of successful people choosing to pickup this trend. Of course, crazy people are too. Proving once again the thin line in the sand that separates the two.
I's called the 'capsule wardrobe movement,' and I want to discuss some pros and cons.
Minimalism, so great...
This isn't about money - it's about taking the line from a-c and cutting out b. There are other options however. If you have so many clothes the decision of what to wear leave you feeling fatigued - there are other options. You could cut down before you go full North Korean.
But if you make so many decisions every day that removing one would serve you hugely - DO IT. I harken to the aged CEO muttering 'SO much work to do,' as they smear feices about themselves... for years on end. This is no way to go out. Especially since the U.S. government does not allow for a legal escape clause.
'You are not your fucking khakis.'
It's because video captivates consumers and grabs their attention like no other medium. I've always been saying this. Grow with it.
Digital video is the tool and mobile devices are the canvas.
Three Easy steps:
1. Call Nick Catucci (856.297.4413)
2. Write a blog (attach the video to it.)
3. Distribute the blog through social media and email (submit the URL to Google.)
Every company needs video advertising. It doesnt hurt to have a dedicated video page on your website. If words are feathers on the SEO scale, and photos are pebbles, video is a brick.
Video is a great place to find your brand. A brand is so much more than still frames and typed words. It is the moving, living you! Infact video may be the only place outside of the mirror it can be found.
90% of information sent to the brain is visual. The brain processes images 60,000 times faster than it does text. Science.
Not to be confused with the popular Rush song but not way off track. In the December 1985 Rush Backstage Club newsletter, drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said:
“Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be - namely me I guess."
Alright so today I want to talk about what it is like being today's Tom Sawyer and how you can do it too. If we think back to the famous Mark Twain classic, various novels featuring this character. You will remember that simply put he is footloose and fancy free. But, there is something to be taken from this. 'The Tao of the Tom,' He uses commodities that are readily available to him. He is somewhat superstitious. And, you know, he's kind of a... For lack of a better word GLOMMERING. As Charles Burke would put it. Kind of rolling through life building on what he has built. Ok, he's not taking out loans. Ok, he is just kind of accumulating and amassing success from the different things that he's done.
For instance a non-Sawyer character in today's entrepreneurial world would be taking out a business loan - To buy all of the new equipment as soon as it's released. OR years after it is released when it's the same price. Without any guarantee that he is going to be using it. NOW today's Tom Sawyer factors it into an invoice. The amount of which get's paid as a deposit. Then he can purchase whatever it is he needs, to do a job, or accomplish something - NOT OUT OF POCKET. TODAY'S TOM SAWYER USES OPM LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Other people's money. You can do this too. Don't feel like it's your self righteous obligation to write a check every time you need something. Deflect the hit. This is kind of like being a square in the eyes of Nash Warfield. It's a very simple practice - just think the next time you are going to spend money, how can you avoid it. If you can do it, if you can avoid the spend, then you are on path to be Today's Tom Sawyer.
I'm Today's Tom Sawyer, I'm Nick Catucci, I'm also Today's Tom Sawyer. And I love not spending money. I avoid it at all costs and I hope you can do the same. I'm going to attach some links below to some creative ideas maybe five websites. Help get the ball rolling on this idea and make you Tom Sawyer.
